The Regal Blue Tang is one of the most recognisable and sought-after marine fish in the hobby. Its vivid royal blue body, bold black 'palette' marking, and bright yellow tail make it an unmistakable centrepiece in any reef aquarium.

Native to the Indo-Pacific and found across coral reefs from East Africa to Hawaii, the Regal Blue Tang is an active, open-water swimmer that thrives in well-established reef systems with plenty of swimming space and live rock for grazing.

A herbivore by nature, it grazes on algae throughout the day, making it a valuable addition to reef tanks where algae control is desired. It is generally peaceful with other species but can be territorial towards other tangs.

Common Questions

Marine Fish FAQs

Is the Regal Blue Tang reef safe?

Yes, the Regal Blue Tang is considered reef safe. It will not harm corals or invertebrates and is a popular choice for reef aquariums. It grazes on algae growing on live rock and glass, which can actually benefit the tank.

How large does a Regal Blue Tang grow?

Regal Blue Tangs can reach up to 31 cm (12 inches) in the wild, though aquarium specimens typically reach 20–25 cm. Due to their active swimming nature, a large tank of at least 180 gallons is recommended for adults.

Can I keep a Regal Blue Tang with other tangs?

Regal Blue Tangs can be kept with other tang species, but care should be taken. They can be territorial towards other tangs, particularly those of a similar body shape. Introducing them simultaneously or into a very large system reduces aggression.

What do you feed a Regal Blue Tang?

Regal Blue Tangs are herbivores and should be fed a varied diet of marine algae, nori (dried seaweed), spirulina-based foods, and high-quality pellets or flakes. Feeding multiple times per day in small amounts is ideal.
