Common Questions

Stingray FAQs

Are freshwater stingrays legal to keep in the UK?

Yes, freshwater stingrays are legal to keep in the UK. They are not subject to CITES restrictions in the same way as Asian arowana. However, they are considered dangerous animals in some regions, so always check your local council regulations before purchasing. Planet Arowana supplies all stingrays with appropriate documentation.

What tank size do freshwater stingrays need?

Freshwater stingrays require a minimum of 500 litres, with a wide, shallow footprint rather than a tall tank. The disc width of the stingray should be no more than one third of the tank's width. A sandy substrate is essential as stingrays like to bury themselves. Larger species and pairs will need significantly more space.

What water conditions do freshwater stingrays need?

Freshwater stingrays require warm, soft, slightly acidic water. Aim for a temperature of 24–28°C, a pH of 6.5–7.5, and very low hardness. Excellent filtration is essential as stingrays are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite. Regular water changes of 25–30% per week are recommended.

What do freshwater stingrays eat?

Freshwater stingrays are carnivores and feed primarily on meaty foods. In captivity they can be trained to accept earthworms, prawns, mussels, and high-quality frozen foods. Live foods can be used to encourage feeding in newly acquired specimens. Avoid dry pellets as the primary diet.

How much does a Black Diamond Stingray cost?

Black Diamond Stingray pricing varies depending on size, grade, and pattern quality. Planet Arowana stocks Black Diamond Stingrays and Black Diamond Hybrids — contact us directly for current pricing and availability. High-grade specimens with exceptional patterning command a premium.

Can Planet Arowana deliver stingrays to Europe?
